THE FURROW · APPLICATION

THE FURROW THAT LEADS US TO COLLAPSE

Why knowing is not enough, and what we can do to change course

SUCCESS → REPETITION → FURROW → THE INERTIAL SUCCESS TRAP → TRANSFORMATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT → CAPACITY FOR ANTICIPATION → KNOWING IS NOT ENOUGH → CHANGE THE RELATIVE RESISTANCE → THE LIGHTHOUSE

01

IT WORKS TOO WELL

The fossil furrow isn’t leading us toward collision because it has failed. It is leading us there because it has worked extraordinarily well. For roughly two centuries, fossil fuels provided an extraordinarily effective source of energy to industrialize, transport, produce and grow. Every success produced a new repetition. Every repetition produced more infrastructure, more investment, more specialized knowledge, more businesses and more dependency. The path became a road. The road became a highway. That is the Law of the Furrow applied to the energy system.

02

THE INERTIAL SUCCESS TRAP

A furrow doesn’t necessarily collapse because it starts working badly. It can lead to collapse precisely because it works too well and lacks a sufficient internal brake.

This is the inertial success trap. The better a trajectory works, the more resources it organizes around itself. And the more resources it organizes, the greater the resistance needed to abandon it. The fossil system today has roads, highways, vehicles, refineries, oil pipelines, gas pipelines, power plants, industries, investments, jobs, contracts, trade routes and geopolitical interests built around its continuity.

WE ARE NOT FIGHTING A SYSTEM THAT DOESN’T WORK. WE ARE TRYING TO GET OUT OF ONE THAT STILL WORKS EXTRAORDINARILY WELL.

03

WE OPERATE WITH A WORLD WE ARE CHANGING

WE KEEP OPERATING UNDER CONDITIONS THAT THE FURROW ITSELF IS DESTROYING.

This is one of the fundamental traps of a deeply established trajectory: its present decisions keep reproducing the conditions of the past that made that trajectory succeed, even as the accumulated success itself is modifying the environment in which it will have to operate tomorrow. We keep building the future with a logic inherited from the world that produced the furrow itself.

04

CYANOBACTERIA

The history of life offers us an extraordinary analogy. Cyanobacteria developed an enormously effective energy strategy. Their expansion and oxygenic photosynthesis helped radically transform Earth’s atmosphere. A successful strategy ended up modifying the very conditions of the environment in which it had thrived.

These are not scientifically identical processes. It is a structural analogy.

THEY COULD NOT ANTICIPATE IT. WE CAN.

We can measure. We can model. We can observe trends. We can develop alternatives. We can understand that a trajectory that worked for generations can alter the conditions that allowed its own success. That is why our fundamental problem is no longer simply knowing.

05

KNOWING IS NOT ENOUGH

KNOWING IS NOT ENOUGH IF CHANGING COSTS MORE THAN REPEATING.

We can have scientific knowledge, alternative technologies and warnings for decades and still remain within the same furrow if the existing trajectory keeps offering less resistance. That is why this project’s main goal is not to convince more people that the climate problem exists. The operational problem is different:

WE HAVE TO CHANGE THE RELATIVE RESISTANCE BETWEEN THE TWO TRAJECTORIES.

The old trajectory has to stop being always the easiest option. And the new one has to accumulate technology, infrastructure, capital, knowledge, people, connections and repetition until it becomes a truly practicable trajectory.

06

THE LIGHTHOUSE

If we want to open another trajectory, we first need to find those who are already outside the furrow, are trying to get out of it, or have the capacity to build alternatives. Many already exist. They are researching. They are building. They are starting ventures. They are funding. They are communicating. They are testing other ways of doing things. But they are scattered. The Lighthouse is the signal we send out so that those who want to leave the furrow can see it and find a point of reference outside the fossil furrow. It is not the solution.

IT IS THE SIGNAL THAT MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO FIND THOSE WHO CAN BUILD IT.
