We all want a clean pavement. We sweep, we hose it down, and the dirt disappears. Except it doesn’t: gravity does its job. It slips into the drain, reaches the river and ends up in the sea. When floods come, the water sweeps away pesticides, paint, plastics and broken appliances all at once. And when the cameras leave, nobody talks about the sea. That is how ocean plastic pollution builds up, far from our sight.

The numbers, plainly
- Every year about 11 million tonnes of plastic enter the sea, according to the UN Environment Programme.
- The oceans already hold between 75 and 199 million tonnes.
- The Ocean Cleanup, the largest clean-up project, removed a record 25,000 tonnes in 2025, and more than 45,000 since it began.
In other words, today about 440 times more plastic enters the sea than is taken out. At the current clean-up pace, and even if no new plastic entered the ocean, removing what has built up would take thousands of years.

Why there is hope against ocean plastic pollution
Ten years ago nobody knew how to clean the ocean. Today there are river barriers that stop rubbish before it reaches the sea, and the clean-up grows every year. What works can be multiplied. And the cheapest solution is also the simplest: stop it getting there.
From the earth, back to the earth
Nature has a gift: everything that comes from the soil is made to return to it. Leaves, fruit and scraps turn into fertile ground. We have broken that cycle. Restoring it is in our hands:
- Compost at home your fruit, vegetable and coffee scraps.
- Choose packaging that returns to the soil or can be reused.
- Join a clean-up of a river, stream or beach near you.
- Don’t push rubbish downhill: pick it up, sort it, and make sure it ends up where it belongs.
